Now that I have discovered my shamanic tunnel and have experienced a journey with drums, it was time to meet my shamanic animal guides. Still following Michael Harner’s book The Way of the Shaman for guidance, I put on some drumming music. This time I had to ‘dance in’ my animal. This involved shaking some rattles, which I actually had, and stomping in time to the drum beat to see which animal joined me.
Very quickly, a mountain lion ‘showed up’. This is not surprising as I already knew she was my totem. Years go, in a past and rather unsettled life, I ran every morning to release pent up negative energy. One morning I realized a mountain lion was running beside me. Not a real one, of course, because I would have dropped right there in the middle of the road out of sheer terror. An imagined one, but I could see her very clearly in my mind’s eye. Since then, she has shown up whenever I need strength or endurance.
The stomping and rattle shaking wasn’t really doing it for me, so I decided to lie down on the floor and head back down my tunnel to see if the mountain lion showed up in my shamanic world. Sure enough, when I pulled myself out of my sandy tunnel to sit on the grassy edge, she joined me. She sat beside me and leaned heavily into me.
All of a sudden, she leaped over the hole and I knew I should follow her. I ran beside her down the aspen hillside and out into the valley. We loped along side by side, and I realized that a hawk was flying above us. Now, that was new to me. I have had a barn owl join me in a guided meditation, but never a hawk.
It swept down and I realized it was huge. Large enough that it grabbed my shoulders in its talons and lifted me up into the air. Higher and higher we went until the river that runs through ‘my’ valley became a ribbon. Then we took off, its great wings beating above me. As we flew along the river’s path, my mountain lion kept pace with us below.
Eventually, we turned back and I was dropped from the sky into my tunnel. With a WHOOSH, I was through the tunnel and back into Eeyore’s house and my sand dunes.
Opened my eyes. End of journey.
Okay, so it seems I currently have two animal guides. Here are what they represent:
Mountain lion – guardian, bravery, personal power (HA!), intention, boundaries (I am all about setting healthy boundaries), freedom, charisma, many lives (I have certainly lived many iterations of my life), sixth sense (yep!)
Hawk – messenger of spirit world (I channel guides), power of focus, leadership, clear vision, increased spiritual awareness (which is what this shamanic exploration is doing)
Well, that certainly all adds up! Interesting about the hawk. I have never looked up its meaning before, so had no preconceived notions to influence my vision. Yet, it is bang on for what is going on in my life right now.
