Success at Work and Home: Relationships Matter
Recently, I was asked what the key principles to success were for my business. After I wrote them all down, I realized that they are the exact same principles that guide me to a successful life in general. It then occurred to me that these exact same principles are keys to helping build a successful organization as an employee.
Makes total sense really. If we are truly being authentic, then our key principles simply guide us regardless of whether we are building a business, contributing to an organization, or living a passionate and happy life. Chances are pretty good, that if you are weak in a particular area at home, this weakness is going to show up at work as well.
When I was doing my keys to success exercise, I came up with 8 key principles. Over the next four weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays, I am going to share those principles with you. As I go through them, see how you do with each one not only in terms of contributing to the success of your business or your place of employment, but also where you could tweak something at home to live a more contented life.
Let’s jump right in and get started with the first principle!
Relationships Matter
I am starting with this one, because as a society we are really starting to fall short where relationships are concerned. Let’s start off with some stats on how a North American spends their time on a typical day:
- 4.5 hours – average amount of time spent online
- 2.5 hours – average amount of time spent watching TV and videos
- 1.0 hour – average amount of time spent on mobile device
That is eight hours! Given we also have to work, commute, eat and sleep, this leaves very little time for one on one social interaction.
We now process information in 140 characters and 2 minute sound bites. And you know what we are losing because of it?
Empathy!
Let’s just say that one of your co-workers is going to be a first time grandmother in a few months. This is not work related, so who cares?
Well, chances are pretty good that this grandma to be is going to get kind of distracted as the happy event draws near. Her boss might like to cut her some slack during that time period. If her team members are aware and empathetic they will understand why she’s not completely focused on her work tasks.
Awareness creates empathy. Empathy creates connection. Connection creates an Esprit de Corps. We develop a one for all and all for one mentality, where we realize we are not operating in a vacuum. Rather we part of a much greater organism.
And the best way way to keep that organism healthy and functioning well, be it at work or at home, is to realize that relationships really do matter.
