It Doesn’t Matter How You Get There
We now move onto Principle #7:
Be True To Yourself
In the introduction to this post, I said that if we are truly being authentic, we operate under the same principles whether we are at work or at home.
I know a lot of us struggle with this. Trust me, I certainly have.
When I started working for a boss several years ago, in a very technical environment, he did his boss thing and sat me down and asked me what my ideal job was.
My answer…
“Well, it sure as hell ain’t this!”
I think this is the only time I have seen this man speechless.
What I went onto explain to him that at my core I am a creative person, and what is authentic for me is empowering people through facilitation and mentoring.
This conversation threw me into quite an existential crisis. Did I need to quit my job?
Yes, I am building up my own business that oozes the authentic me. But guess what? I made my very technical job work for me so that I could be my authentic self in it as well.
My greatest joy working, as an IT project manager, with my clients the past two years was not delivering a system. Honestly, I couldn’t care less what we delivered. It was mentoring and empowering a team of business analysts to realize they did know their business! And they could partner with IT as equals to turn those requirements into a system.
In my current role, I get to facilitate and mentor both Business and IT as our organization transitions from a project world to an operations world.
You can bring your authentic self to work. You just need to figure out what really floats your boat, then emphasize that aspect of you in your job.
Nothing at work allows you to do that? And that could be. Then start looking for something that does. If you can’t be authentic there, your organization has already lost you. And that’s not good for you and it is not good the organization.
The same holds true for your current life situation. You can’t be your authentic self? Then you need to make a change, because you are no good to anybody, particularly yourself.
Can you imagine if we all went through each and every day as our authentic selves?
Holy crumpets there would be no end to what we could accomplish!
