Success at Work & Home: It Doesn’t Matter How You Get There

If we are truly being authentic, our key principles simply guide us regardless of whether we are building a business, contributing to an organization, or living a passionate and happy life. This series of eight articles explores 8 key principles that not only guide how I run my business, but how I run my life as well. We now move onto Principle #6:

It Doesn’t Matter How You Get There

Okay, I might make you squirm a little with this principle. Why? Because I am going to throw control right out the window.

Be it in life or on a project at work is it absolutely critical to clearly identify the end state. But, it is equally critical to trust that the Universe will map out how best to get us there.

I realize that this is rather esoteric, so I am going to share an example from my personal life.

I was in a 16 year toxic relationship and when that came to an end I was very clear that I would not accept anything less than a relationship in which I was loved for who I am. The good, the bad, and the quirky. I even went so far as to write a list of the characteristics and the values my life partner must have.

Then I stopped thinking about it and just started putting one foot in front of the other. I got my own apartment. I met new people. I went on some dates. But I didn’t try to control finding Mr Very Right. I just trusted the Universe knew how to get me to my end state.

At the end of a year, in walked Marc and he had every single characteristic and value on my list.

Only he is French! And he lives in Quebec! Hello! Ontario born and bred English girl!

But during that year, the Universe took me down winding paths that prepared me for living in another culture and in another language. And my end state was not only what I put out there, but was way better, because the Quebec culture is far better suited to my artsy fartsy bohemian personality.

The same holds true for projects you take on at work. You must have a clear idea of what you want to deliver, but how you get there you simply trust in the flow. Your product or service will end up way better than you could ever have imagined.

Be it at home or at work we have to trust the Universe.

Simply establish where you want to go, then go with the flow to get there.
