Success at Work & Home: Just Do It
If we are truly being authentic, our key principles simply guide us regardless of whether we are building a business, contributing to an organization, or living a passionate and happy life. This series of eight articles explores 8 key principles that not only guide how I run my business, but how I run my life as well. As you work your way through the series, check to see if you can improve your home life or work life by paying more attention to one or more of these principles.
To date we have covered:
Relationships Matter
We Can’t Do It All
Listen First, Speak Second
Dig Deeper
We now move onto Principle #5:
Just Do It
In the Dig Deeper article, I talked about the importance of taking time to get all our facts. Let’s say we now have to go off and do something. You know what quite often happens?
Nothing happens. Why? Because we get into analysis paralysis.
I bet you can point to at least one person in your personal life who is unhappy, and talks and talks and talks about how they are going to change their lives and get happy, but never does anything about it?
Or, maybe this is you!
You might think there are a lot of reasons for this, but in fact there is one.
Fear.
Fear of failure. If you don’t start something, you can’t fail at it, so you don’t start.
Fear of criticism. What if someone does not like how you are going about it? If you don’t start, nobody can criticize your approach.
Fear of losing control. We will talk about this one in the next article.
We think that if we analyze a situation to death we can cover off all the angles. We can guarantee that we won’t fail. We can guarantee that people won’t find fault with our approach. We can guarantee that we can control every single step along the way.
Well, here’s the straight goods on this one …
You will never in a million years cover off all the angles.
Chances are some things you attempt in your life will fail, if by failure you mean things don’t turn out as planned.
Somebody somewhere absolutely will criticize you. This does not mean you are wrong or incompetent. It simply means they don’t agree with you.
You should never ever attempt to control the journey.
One thing is guaranteed. If you never start, you most definitely will not succeed! So, just do it.
