Success at Work & Home: We Can’t Do It All
If we are truly being authentic, our key principles simply guide us regardless of whether we are building a business, contributing to an organization, or living a passionate and happy life. This series of eight articles explores 8 key principles that not only guide how I run my business, but how I run my life as well. As you work your way through the series, check to see if you can improve your home life or work life by paying more attention to one or more of these principles.
To date we have covered:
We now move onto Principle #2:
We Can’t Do It All
In the article on Relationships Matter, we established that it is important to think of ourselves as part of a greater whole, or organism. Now it is time to start tapping into the power of that organism.
I find it fascinating that when I walk around at work I find some people wildly busy to the point of being overwhelmed, others steadily poking away, and others staring blankly at their computer screens totally underwhelmed.
Is it because we have keeners and slackers? No, of course not! Nobody comes to work to be stressed out of their minds, and nobody comes to work to be bored stupid.
What we are horrible at is spreading out the workload. Let’s start with the overwhelmed people.
I am sure you have thought or said the following at work or at home:
- Other people should know I need help and simply pitch in
- It’s faster and easier to just do it myself
- If I delegate, they won’t do it my way
- I should be able to cope
In a similar vein, we have the thinking of the underwhelmed:
- My supervisor should know that I don’t have enough to do
- If I help someone out, I might not do it the way they want
- Obviously everyone is coping quite nicely and nobody needs my help
Okay, here’s the deal for the overwhelmed:
- Nobody can read minds. You have to tell people.
- It is not faster and easier to do it yourself; you are crashing and burning. And when you do crash, nothing will get done.
- Who cares if they don’t do it your way, as long as the end result is the same.
- As for being able to cope, hang up your cape; super heroes only exist in comic books.
And here’s the deal for the underwhelmed:
- No, your supervisor likely doesn’t know you can take on more work because there is a good chance he or she is in the overwhelmed category and can’t even think straight.
- Who cares if you don’t do it the other person’s way. You are competent and professional and your way is just fine.
- Trust me, people are not coping nicely and someone definitely needs your help.
All of the above applies to your home life as well. Women, in particular, are famous for doing it all and never asking for help.
As an individual we can do only so much. As an organization or family, however, the whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts.
