Tarot: Choosing a Deck

One of the questions I am frequently asked is “how do I choose a Tarot deck?” In my usual oh-so-helpful style, I answer the question with some questions.

Are you new to Tarot?

If you are brand new to Tarot, picking a deck is quite simple. I always recommend starting with the Rider-Waite deck. In my article on Rider-Waite, I explain that the simple drawings and easily understood symbols take the guesswork out of interpretation. Think of the Rider-Waite deck as the training wheels of Tarot.

What is you style?

If you have some experience with Tarot, it really boils down to style. While Tarot follows the same structure from deck to deck, the illustrations are as varied as the number of deck creators. As well, in my article The Difference Between Tarot and Oracle Decks I explain you get more flexibility in your interpretations with oracle decks.

In the end, it boils down to walking into a store, or browsing an online store, and going with what calls to you. Just let your mid go blank. Trust me, the right deck for you will shout out “pick me, pick me”.
